Ourika Valley Day Trip from Marrakech: Berber Villages and Setti Fatma Waterfalls

Trade the medina heat for mountain air: argan oil, mint tea in a Berber home and a riverside walk to the Setti Fatma waterfalls, all in one easy private day.

  • Private

Overview

Need a breather from the souks? This private Ourika Valley day trip takes you from Marrakech into the foothills of the High Atlas in about 75 minutes. The road follows a river lined with walnut trees, clay villages and café terraces built right over the water. It is the easiest mountain escape from the city, and the air up here feels about ten degrees fresher on a summer afternoon.

Your English-speaking driver stops where it makes sense for you: a women’s cooperative that presses argan oil by hand, a Berber family home where tea is poured from a height, and finally Setti Fatma, the village at the end of the road. From there a short, rocky trail climbs to the first of the waterfalls. You set the pace, linger over lunch by the river and head back when you are ready.

Because the tour is private, it works just as well for a couple as for a family with kids or grandparents. Coming from Kingston, Port of Spain or San Juan? Think of it as a cool, green day in the hills before the dry drama of the desert.

Highlights

  • Scenic drive into the High Atlas foothills, about 75 minutes from Marrakech
  • Argan oil cooperative run by local women
  • Mint tea with a Berber family in a traditional home
  • Walk to the first Setti Fatma waterfall
  • Lunch on a riverside terrace (pay locally)
  • Flexible private schedule, ideal for families

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 Marrakech – Ourika Valley – Setti Fatma – Marrakech

Morning: pickup at your riad or hotel around 9:00. Leave the city behind as the Atlas peaks appear on the horizon. First stop: an argan oil cooperative, where women crack and grind the kernels by hand and explain the difference between cosmetic and culinary oil.

Late morning: step inside a Berber house for mint tea and a look at a traditional kitchen and terrace. Then continue up the valley to Setti Fatma.

Midday: walk 30 to 60 minutes each way to the first waterfall. The path crosses the river and has some boulders, so a local walking guide is useful (agreed and paid on the spot). Enjoy a tagine on a terrace with your feet almost in the water.

Afternoon: drive back to Marrakech, arriving around 17:00.

Overnight: — (day trip) Meals: Lunch not included (pay locally)

Planning your Ourika Valley day trip

Wear sneakers or light hiking shoes with good grip: the waterfall trail is short but uneven, and you may hop across stones. Bring a light layer, sunscreen, water and some small dirham notes for tea, tips and the walking guide.

The pace is relaxed, so this is a good first excursion after a long flight. From December to March the river can run high and some upper falls may be off-limits after rain. In July and August the valley gets busy on weekends with Marrakchis escaping the heat, so we leave early. Pair it with a sunset in the Agafay desert on another day for a perfect two-day mix.

What our travelers say

Highly recommended!

We had an amazing 4-day overland trip from Fes to Marrakech with Morocco Excursions, and I can’t recommend this company highly enough — especially our guide and driver, Hassan. From the moment he picked us up, we felt completely safe and taken care of. Hassan is a fantastic driver — something we appreciated even more after meeting other t…

Moroccan journey

My family and I planned our own 10-day itinerary in Morocco. We hired a car with a driver to travel with us and enjoy everything Morocco has to offer. Salem, our driver, was a great person: kind, always available, and not just our driver — he suggested things to do, places to see and where to stay, and explained his traditions and culture…

Frequently asked questions

How long is the walk to the Setti Fatma waterfalls?

Allow 30 to 60 minutes each way to reach the first waterfall, depending on your pace and the river level. The path is rocky with a few short climbs. If you prefer not to walk, you can stay at a riverside café in the village.

Is the Ourika Valley suitable for children and seniors?

Yes. The drive is short, the cooperative and Berber house visits need no effort, and the waterfall walk is optional. With a private tour you decide how far to go and when to turn back.

Is lunch included?

No. Lunch is paid locally so you can choose what and where you eat. A tagine with a drink on a riverside terrace usually costs about the same as a casual meal in Marrakech.

What is the best time of year for this trip?

Spring (March to May) is greenest, and summer is when the cool air is most welcome. In winter the snowy peaks are beautiful, but heavy rain can close the trail for a day or two.

How is the price calculated?

It is a private tour, so you pay for the vehicle and driver and the cost is shared by your group. The more people, the lower the price per person. The booking form shows your exact price and a deposit via PayPal secures the date.

Any questions about this tour?

Send us a message, no commitment: we reply personally, usually within 24 hours. We can also adapt the route to your dates.
