Ouzoud Waterfalls plunging into a red-rock gorge with a rainbow in the mist, Morocco Private

Ouzoud Waterfalls Day Trip from Marrakech: Morocco’s Highest Falls

See Morocco's highest waterfalls, meet wild Barbary macaques and ride a little boat to the spray, on a private day trip from Marrakech.

  • Marrakech
  • Private
  • From US$ 107 (€95) per person

Overview

Picture a 110-meter curtain of water dropping into a red-rock gorge, rainbows in the mist and olive trees all around. That is the payoff of this private Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip, the most spectacular natural sight within easy reach of Marrakech. The drive takes about two and a half to three hours through farmland and the foothills of the Middle Atlas.

At the top of the falls, a trail winds down past mills and café terraces to the pool at the bottom. Along the way you will likely meet Barbary macaques, the only monkeys native to North Africa, swinging through the trees. Down at the base, small flat-bottomed boats take you close to the spray for a few dirhams.

It is a fun, active day that suits families, couples and anyone who likes to walk a little. If you grew up near Dunn’s River or the Caribbean rainforests, this is Morocco’s answer: drier, higher and just as photogenic.

Highlights

  • Ouzoud Waterfalls, about 110 m high, the tallest in Morocco
  • Wild Barbary macaques in the olive groves
  • Optional boat ride to the foot of the falls
  • Lunch on a terrace facing the cascades
  • Scenic drive through the countryside and Atlas foothills

Before your Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip

Wear comfortable shoes with grip: the trail has steps and can be slippery near the water. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat and small change for the boat and drinks. Keep snacks and bags closed around the macaques.

Spring is when the falls are strongest; by late summer they are lighter but still impressive. Weekends and Moroccan holidays are busier, so a weekday is ideal. Families who love nature can also try the Ourika Valley, and our family trips in Morocco page has more kid-friendly ideas.

What our travelers say

We had an amazing 4-day overland trip from Fes to Marrakech with Morocco Excursions, and I can’t recommend this company highly enough — especially our guide and driver, Hassan. From the moment he picked us up, we felt completely safe and taken care of. Hassan is a fantastic driver — something we appreciated even more after meeting other t…

Moroccan journey

My family and I planned our own 10-day itinerary in Morocco. We hired a car with a driver to travel with us and enjoy everything Morocco has to offer. Salem, our driver, was a great person: kind, always available, and not just our driver — he suggested things to do, places to see and where to stay, and explained his traditions and culture…

Frequently asked questions

How difficult is the walk at Ouzoud?

It is moderate. The trail down to the base of the falls takes about 20 to 30 minutes, with steps and some uneven sections. The climb back is the harder part, but you can go slowly and stop at cafés on the way.

Can we swim at the waterfalls?

Swimming is sometimes possible in calmer pools away from the main cascade, but conditions change. Ask on the day and always follow local advice, as currents near the falls can be strong.

Are the monkeys safe?

The Barbary macaques are wild but used to visitors. Keep a respectful distance, do not feed them and hold on to food and sunglasses. Feeding is bad for their health.

How long is the drive?

About 150 km, which takes roughly two and a half to three hours each way. The full day lasts around nine to ten hours.
