Agafay Desert Tour from Marrakech: Camel Ride, Sunset and Dinner

A desert sunset without the long drive: camel ride, golden hour over the Atlas and a candlelit dinner with live music, 40 minutes from Marrakech.

  • From US$ 107 (€95) per person

Overview

No time for the Sahara? This private Agafay desert tour gives you a taste of the desert in a single afternoon. Just 40 minutes from Marrakech, the Agafay is a stone desert of rolling, sand-colored hills with the snowy High Atlas on the horizon. It is not a sea of dunes like Merzouga, but the silence, the space and the sunsets are very real.

Your driver picks you up in the afternoon and drops you at a desert camp. You ride a camel across the hills as the light turns gold, then watch the sun go down from a ridge. Dinner follows under the stars: salads, tagine and mint tea, with live music around the fire.

It is one of our favorite picks for honeymooners and families with small kids, because there is no early alarm and no long road. You are back in Marrakech by night. Wondering how it compares with the big dunes? Read our guide to Merzouga vs Zagora vs Agafay.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 Marrakech – Agafay Desert – Marrakech

Afternoon: pickup at your riad or hotel, usually two to three hours before sunset (around 15:00 in summer, 14:00 in winter). Drive southwest out of the city; the landscape empties fast and the Atlas rises ahead.

Golden hour: arrive at the camp and meet the camels. The ride lasts around 30 to 60 minutes across the stony hills. Then climb a ridge for sunset photos as the mountains turn pink.

Evening: dinner in the camp's tent or by the fire: Moroccan salads, a tagine and dessert, followed by mint tea and live music. Time to look up: away from the city lights, the stars come out quickly.

Night: drive back to Marrakech, arriving around 21:30 to 22:30.

Overnight: — (day trip) Meals: Dinner

Make the most of your Agafay desert tour

Bring a warm layer even in summer: once the sun drops, the desert cools fast, and from November to March evenings can be genuinely cold. Long pants are more comfortable on a camel. Closed shoes help on stony ground.

Camels are calm and the ride is short, so children can usually join, sitting with a parent if needed. Tell us about any dietary needs when booking so the camp can prepare a vegetarian or kids' menu. Want a full night under the stars instead? Upgrade to a real Sahara camp with the 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour.

What our travelers say

Highly recommended!

We had an amazing 4-day overland trip from Fes to Marrakech with Morocco Excursions, and I can’t recommend this company highly enough — especially our guide and driver, Hassan. From the moment he picked us up, we felt completely safe and taken care of. Hassan is a fantastic driver — something we appreciated even more after meeting other t…

Moroccan journey

My family and I planned our own 10-day itinerary in Morocco. We hired a car with a driver to travel with us and enjoy everything Morocco has to offer. Salem, our driver, was a great person: kind, always available, and not just our driver — he suggested things to do, places to see and where to stay, and explained his traditions and culture…

Frequently asked questions

Is Agafay a real desert?

Yes, it is a dry stone desert with rolling hills rather than sand dunes. If you dream of high golden dunes, choose Merzouga. Agafay is ideal when you want desert scenery with a short drive.

Can we stay overnight in Agafay?

Many camps offer tents for the night. This tour returns to Marrakech, but we can arrange an overnight stay on request; just ask when booking.

Is the camel ride suitable for kids?

Usually yes. The ride is short and the camels are led on foot by a handler. Very young children can ride with a parent. Let us know their ages in advance.

What should I wear?

Comfortable pants, closed shoes, sunglasses and a warm jacket for the evening. In winter, bring a hat and gloves too; the temperature drops quickly after sunset.

Any questions about this tour?

Send us a message, no commitment: we reply personally, usually within 24 hours. We can also adapt the route to your dates.
