Private Tangier Day Tour: Kasbah, Medina, Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules

Where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean: the kasbah, the medina, a legendary café and the Caves of Hercules in one private day around Tangier.

  • 1 day
  • Tangier
  • Private
  • From US$ 107 (€95) per person

Overview

Tangier sits at the very tip of Africa, a short ferry ride from Spain, and it has always been a city of writers, painters and travelers passing through. This private Tangier day tour shows you its best sides in a single day: the hilltop kasbah and its museum, the lanes of the medina, the Grand Socco square, a glass of mint tea at the cliffside Café Hafa, and the wild coast where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet.

Your English-speaking driver picks you up at your hotel, at the port or at the train station, and handles the hills and the parking so you can enjoy the views. The afternoon is all about the coast: the lighthouse at Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules, whose sea opening is said to resemble the map of Africa.

It is a great introduction if you arrive by ferry from Tarifa or by the high-speed train from Casablanca. To continue south, look at the day trip from Tangier to Chefchaouen.

Highlights

  • Kasbah of Tangier and the Kasbah Museum
  • Medina lanes and the lively Grand Socco square
  • Mint tea with a sea view at the historic Café Hafa
  • Cape Spartel lighthouse, where two seas meet
  • Caves of Hercules and their Africa-shaped opening
  • Pickup from your hotel, the port or the train station

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 Tangier city and coast tour

Morning: Pickup in Tangier and a short drive up to the kasbah. Visit the Kasbah Museum in the former sultan's palace, then walk down through the medina to the Petit Socco and the Grand Socco, where the old town meets the new.

Midday: Lunch at your own pace, then stop at Café Hafa, open since the 1920s, for mint tea on terraces stepping down toward the Strait of Gibraltar. On clear days you can see Spain.

Afternoon: Drive west along the coast to Cape Spartel, where a lighthouse marks the meeting point of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Continue to the Caves of Hercules, then enjoy the Atlantic beaches on the way back. Drop-off in the late afternoon.

Moroccan journey

My family and I planned our own 10-day itinerary in Morocco. We hired a car with a driver to travel with us and enjoy everything Morocco has to offer. Salem, our driver, was a great person: kind, always available, and not just our driver — he suggested things to do, places to see and where to stay, and explained his traditions and culture…

Frequently asked questions

Can you pick us up from the ferry port?

Yes. Ferries from Tarifa arrive at the Tangier Ville port near the city center. Send us your ferry time and your driver will meet you there.

How long does the tour last?

About six to seven hours including lunch. Because it is private, you can stay longer at the stops you like or finish earlier.

Is the medina of Tangier easy to visit?

Yes, it is compact. Your driver drops you near the kasbah so you walk downhill. If you want history and stories along the way, add a local guide on request.

Can we combine this with Asilah?

Yes, though it makes a full day. Asilah is about 45 minutes away; we can shorten the city part and finish there, or you can book our separate day trip to Asilah and Larache.

Any questions about this tour?

Send us a message, no commitment: we reply personally, usually within 24 hours. We can also adapt the route to your dates.
