Sahara Photography Tour in Merzouga: Dunes, Nomads and the Milky Way

Three days timed around the light: golden-hour dunes, dawn 4x4 shoots, respectful nomad portraits and a Milky Way session in the dark Sahara sky.

  • 3 days
  • Merzouga
  • Private
  • From US$ 411 per person

Overview

Most desert trips catch one sunset and leave. This private Sahara photography tour stays in Merzouga for three days and plans every outing around the light: golden hour on the high dunes, blue hour at camp, dawn shoots by 4×4 and a night session under the Milky Way. Erg Chebbi’s dunes rise up to about 150 meters, and their curves, ripples and shadows change minute by minute.

You travel with a driver-guide who knows the dunes and the families of the area. He takes you to the right ridge at the right time and arranges portrait sessions with nomads and Gnawa musicians in Khamlia, always with their consent. Expect practical tips on composition and timing in the field, plus a relaxed review of your best shots on the last morning.

Any camera works, from a phone to a full-frame kit. For more photo-friendly routes, see our photography tours in Morocco.

Highlights

  • Golden-hour sessions on the high dunes of Erg Chebbi
  • Dawn 4x4 shoot across the dunes and desert plains
  • Nomad family portraits, always with consent
  • Gnawa musicians in Khamlia
  • Milky Way session on a dark night
  • Camel caravans and dune lines at sunrise
  • Two nights in a desert camp

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 Merzouga: Golden Hour on the High Dunes

Meet your driver-guide in Merzouga in the early afternoon and review your gear and goals together. As the light softens, head to the high dunes of Erg Chebbi for your first session.

Work on composition: leading lines along the crests, footprints-free ripples, and tiny figures against huge slopes for scale. At sunset, the sand turns orange, then red, then lilac; stay through blue hour for silhouettes. Settle into the desert camp for dinner and a first look at the night sky to plan tomorrow's Milky Way shoot.

Overnight: Desert camp, Erg Chebbi Meals: Dinner

  2. Day 2 Dawn 4x4 Shoot – Nomad Portraits – Khamlia – Milky Way

Leave before sunrise by 4x4 to catch first light raking across untouched dunes. Mid-morning, visit a nomad family for tea and a portrait session, arranged in advance and always with consent. Natural window light in a tent makes beautiful images.

After lunch and a rest, head to Khamlia to photograph Gnawa musicians in their courtyard. Return to the dunes for golden hour, then dinner at camp. Once it is fully dark, go out with a tripod for a Milky Way session, using camp lights or a flashlight for creative foreground lighting.

Overnight: Desert camp, Erg Chebbi Meals: Breakfast, dinner

  3. Day 3 Sunrise Dune Lines and Caravans – Review – Merzouga

Last call for sunrise. Shoot crisp dune lines in low, side light and a camel caravan crossing the crests as the sun rises, a classic Sahara image that needs early timing and a bit of patience.

Back at camp, enjoy breakfast and a relaxed review session: pick your favorite shots, talk through what worked and get tips for editing. Then return to Merzouga in the late morning. End of tour, with a memory card full of the desert's best light.

Overnight: — (end of tour) Meals: Breakfast

Gear and timing for the Sahara photography tour

Bring a tripod, spare batteries and memory cards, a lens cloth and a rain cover or zip bag to protect gear from sand. Change lenses inside the car or tent, never in the wind. A headlamp with a red light helps at night.

For Milky Way photography, choose dates near the new moon; the core is best seen from spring to early autumn. Drones are tightly regulated in Morocco and are often seized at customs, so leave yours at home unless you have checked current rules. This tour suits all levels, from curious phone shooters to experienced amateurs.

What our travelers say

Highly recommended!

We had an amazing 4-day overland trip from Fes to Marrakech with Morocco Excursions, and I can’t recommend this company highly enough — especially our guide and driver, Hassan. From the moment he picked us up, we felt completely safe and taken care of. Hassan is a fantastic driver — something we appreciated even more after meeting other t…

Moroccan journey

My family and I planned our own 10-day itinerary in Morocco. We hired a car with a driver to travel with us and enjoy everything Morocco has to offer. Salem, our driver, was a great person: kind, always available, and not just our driver — he suggested things to do, places to see and where to stay, and explained his traditions and culture…

Frequently asked questions

Do I need professional gear?

No. A smartphone with a night mode can capture beautiful dune shots. For the Milky Way, a camera with manual settings, a wide lens and a tripod gives much better results.

Can I photograph local people?

Yes, during arranged sessions with nomad families and musicians who agree to it. Elsewhere, always ask first. A tip is customary and appreciated.

Can I bring a drone?

We advise against it. Morocco requires special authorization for drones, and customs often confiscate them on arrival. Check the current rules before traveling, as of October 2026.

When is the best season for this tour?

October to April offers comfortable temperatures and clear skies. For the Milky Way core, aim for March to September around the new moon; summer days are very hot, so we rest at midday.

Is this tour suitable for non-photographers?

Yes. Partners and friends who do not shoot still enjoy the desert, the visits and the camp nights. The price is per person and depends on group size.

Any questions about this tour?

Send us a message, no commitment: we reply personally, usually within 24 hours. We can also adapt the route to your dates.
