4 Day Desert Tour from Marrakech with Two Nights in Merzouga

Four days, two nights in Merzouga: the classic route to the Sahara plus a free day for Gnawa music, Rissani and the dunes. Shared minibus, €210 per person.

  • 4 days
  • Marrakech
  • Small group
  • From US$ 236 (€210) per person

Overview

The 4 day desert tour from Marrakech is the version we recommend most often. It follows the same scenic road as the 3-day trip, over the High Atlas and past Aït Benhaddou to the Dades and Todra gorges, but it gives you something the shorter tour cannot: a whole day in and around Merzouga, and two nights at the edge of the Sahara.

That extra day changes the rhythm. You ride into Erg Chebbi by camel and sleep in a Berber camp, then you have time to visit Khamlia, a village where Gnawa musicians keep alive songs brought across the desert centuries ago, browse the market town of Rissani and simply enjoy a free afternoon among the dunes. The drive home on day four still runs through the Draa Valley, so you see a different landscape on the way back.

It is a shared small-group tour with a fixed price of €210 per person and a maximum of 17 travelers in an air-conditioned minibus. We leave Marrakech every day. If you are deciding between desert areas, our guide to Merzouga vs Zagora vs Agafay explains why Merzouga is worth the drive.

Highlights

  • Two nights in Merzouga, one of them in a Berber desert camp
  • Camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes
  • Live Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia
  • Rissani, the old caravan town of the Tafilalet
  • Aït Benhaddou, Dades Gorge and Todra Gorge on the way
  • A free afternoon to rest, sandboard or explore the dunes

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 Marrakech – Tizi n'Tichka – Aït Benhaddou – Ouarzazate – Dades

We pick you up in Marrakech in the morning and head into the High Atlas. The road snakes up to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, with stops at viewpoints over terraced Berber villages. Your first big visit is Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO-listed ksar of earthen towers above a riverbed; take your time to climb to the top for the view. Continue through Ouarzazate, home of Morocco's film studios, and along the valley of the kasbahs to the Dades Valley. You reach your hotel in the late afternoon, in time to watch the light fade on the red cliffs before dinner.

Overnight: Hotel in the Dades Valley Meals: Dinner

  2. Day 2 Dades – Todra Gorge – Merzouga, camel trek and desert camp

Breakfast, then a short drive to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge. Here the canyon narrows to a few meters between walls that rise up to 300 m, and you can walk the most dramatic stretch beside the stream. After lunch (not included), the landscape opens into stony desert as you drive through Tinejdad and Erfoud to Merzouga. Late in the afternoon you meet your camels and ride about an hour into Erg Chebbi. Watch the sunset from the crest of a dune, then enjoy dinner, drums and stargazing at the Berber camp, where you spend your first desert night.

Overnight: Desert camp in Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) Meals: Breakfast, dinner

  3. Day 3 Merzouga: Khamlia Gnawa music, Rissani and a free afternoon

Get up for sunrise over the dunes, then ride back to Merzouga for breakfast. Today has no long drive. You visit Khamlia, a small village whose families perform Gnawa music, a hypnotic style with roots in sub-Saharan Africa, and you can stay for a few songs over mint tea. Next is Rissani, once the end point of caravans from Timbuktu, with its busy souk, dates and spice stalls. The afternoon is free: nap by the pool, try sandboarding, book an optional quad ride or walk back into the dunes for a second sunset. Tonight you sleep in Merzouga again.

Overnight: Hotel or camp in Merzouga Meals: Breakfast, dinner

  4. Day 4 Merzouga – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

An early breakfast, because this is the long drive back, about 10 hours with breaks. The route heads west across the plains through Alnif and N'Kob, a village studded with kasbahs, before following the Draa Valley and its palm groves toward Agdz and Ouarzazate. After a lunch stop (not included), you climb back over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and descend toward Marrakech, arriving in the evening. The driver drops you at or near your riad or hotel, ready for a well-earned shower and a last stroll through Jemaa el-Fna.

Overnight: — (tour ends in Marrakech) Meals: Breakfast

Is the 4 day desert tour from Marrakech right for you?

Choose this tour if you want the Sahara to feel like more than a quick stop. You still spend long hours in the minibus on days 1 and 4, but day 3 is relaxed, which makes the whole trip easier for families with older kids and first-time visitors.

Pickup: around 7:00 a.m. in Marrakech; in the medina the driver may meet you at a nearby square. Drop-off on day 4 is in the evening.

What to bring: a small backpack for the camp night, a fleece or jacket (desert nights get cold from October to April), sunglasses, a scarf, sunscreen, a power bank and some dirhams for lunches, tips and souvenirs. Moroccan journey

My family and I planned our own 10-day itinerary in Morocco. We hired a car with a driver to travel with us and enjoy everything Morocco has to offer. Salem, our driver, was a great person: kind, always available, and not just our driver — he suggested things to do, places to see and where to stay, and explained his traditions and culture…

Frequently asked questions

What is a shared group tour?

You travel with other guests in an air-conditioned minibus, up to 17 people. Everyone follows the same itinerary and schedule, which is why the price is lower than a private tour.

Is the price per person fixed?

Yes, €210 per person (about US$236 as of October 2026), no matter how many people join. A PayPal deposit secures your seat and you pay the balance on arrival.

Where do we sleep the second night in Merzouga?

Usually in a hotel or kasbah-style guesthouse at the foot of the dunes, so you get a proper bed and shower between the camp and the long drive home. The camp night is always included.

Can I have a private room as a solo traveler?

Yes. Rooms are shared doubles or twins by default; a single supplement for your own room and tent is available on request.

Can I upgrade the desert camp?

Yes. A superior upgrade with more comfortable rooms and tents with private bathrooms is available. Ask when booking and we will quote the extra cost.

Any questions about this tour?

Send us a message, no commitment: we reply personally, usually within 24 hours. We can also adapt the route to your dates.
